Again, I am an atheist.

Again, some atheists in some situations ARE oppressed for being atheists. This is true, it happens. It happened to me. I was self-harming and was suicidal when I was 7 years old because of how I was treated as a queer gender-questioning atheist raised by white supremacist fundamentalist Southern Baptists. You don’t have to tell me that bad shit happens.

BUT

I still see people using that fucked-up ‘atheists are less trusted than rapists’ study example to explain how horrible we atheists have it, and I’m going to say this one more time and then I’m hopefully never going to have to say this again.

THE ‘FACT’ THAT ATHEISTS ARE LESS TRUSTED THAN RAPISTS SAYS MORE ABOUT HOW WE VIEW RAPISTS THAN HOW WE VIEW ATHEISTS.

THE ‘FACT’ THAT ATHEISTS ARE LESS TRUSTED THAN RAPISTS IS MORE A FUNDAMENTAL FAILING OF PATRIARCHY AND RAPE CULTURE THAN IT IS OF RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO TAKE THE ‘FACT’ THAT ATHEISTS ARE LESS TRUSTED THAN RAPISTS AND TALK ABOUT HOW AWFUL IT IS TO BE AN ATHEIST RATHER THAN A RAPE VICTIM, SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP. FOREVER.
