This is exactly how I felt.
HOWEVER, this was also written as a Twilight fanfic. So, the parallels in Christian’s character and Edward’s character make sense to me.
Both characters, though, deserve to be hit in the head with a shovel.

Night Play - Sherrilyn Kenyon
Marked - P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast
Fifty Shades of Gray - E. L. James
SO MUCH IS GOING ON.
The words “smokin’ hot werewolf” in the description. This is how I know the author does not treat her nonhumans as anything but the Love Interest.
Auuugh, I just want to read fiction about birdy people and bird shapeshifters and nonhumans who are properly nonhuman, not the same Exotic Mysterious Attractive Person Of The Right Sex (which is always the opposite sex) stereotype dressed in werewolf clothes…
Though, the book I’m reading right now, The Philosopher and the Wolf, I really like. And last night I stayed up until about 4am to finish Wildwood Dancing. I need to read more by Juliet Marillier, I really like her writing… I have read three books by her now, and I like them all.
I have The Fox Woman by Kij Johnson, but aah, I’m really nervous about it because novels about Japanese mythology by non-Japanese writers usually make me want to bang my head on my pillow… I want to ask my followers if they have read it and what they think, but the kind of frustration I have about this kind of thing, I don’t know if a non-Japanese person would notice it. I guess I will just have to try it, and have another book on my shelf in case I give up in the first few minutes but I don’t want to give up my bath.
(Yes, I always read in the bath…)
all my followers, please write me amazing novels about nonhuman acting nonhumans, maybe with a baby zapdos, yessss, thank you
Have you tried reading Sherrilyn Kenyon novels?
The main character is almost always a human entering themselves into a distinctly non-human world. It’s got serious Greek mythology references, and I know for a fact that there’s a hawk ‘kin type thing. There’s vampires (called daemons) and shape shifters of both human, and non-human varieties (meaning some of them are humans that can turn into animals, some are animals that can turn into humans).
They’re really emotional, and not specifically otherkin. BUT, they are really cool books about a very non-human world interacting with a human world.
P.S. They’re romance novels and can get pretty graphic during the sexy times. But, they’re not really like most romance novels in that the love interest is just a smokin’ hot werewolf gettin’ dirty with a human lady. Like… If you read just one out of the series it seems like that, but there’s SOOO much backstory, and side story, and under story, and top story and everything. Like. It’s really great.
